Introduction
When was the last time you were on Boca Raton’s roadways and didn’t see an e-Bike or e-Scooter? They’re all over the place and are forecast to continue rapid growth1. The city is developing plans to improve micro-mobility safety and requests your input.
Background
While micro-mobility encompasses several different types of devices, e.g., analog bikes, e-Bikes, single wheels, etc., this article focuses on e-Bikes since they dominate the micro-mobility market.
The New York Times recently published two excellent articles detailing the current situation regarding e-Bikes.2,3
Some amazing facts from the articles are as follows:
Bloomberg New Energy Finance calculates that e-Bikes are already cutting worldwide demand for oil by a million barrels per day, or four times as much as all the world’s electric cars.3
On a pedal bike, the chance of dying from an injury is about three-tenths of 1 percent but on an e-Bike, the data indicated, it was 11 percent.3
There are significant advantages and risks to e-Bikes and the city is trying to determine the best plan for making the environment safer while not having a negative impact on growth. BocaFirst has been reporting on the e-Bike situation in Boca Raton and concurs that the city needs to make significant changes for safety. e-Bike Crash at Boca Middle – BocaFirst
